Tiny Projects and Buffet.

Dear Prof,

A small bent plant with green leaves and exposed roots on cracked soil, with lightning and dark clouds on the left and bright sunrise on the right

I understand that you are worried about me finishing up my PhD, and putting all my efforts on one single thing. But the step to that goes from small steps that if we take, we will reach at the required place.

I know you don’t want us to rush, but if we skip the steps in between, we wont be able to do anything at all, that would result in in-action.

For me, my PhD is a place where I can learn the concepts, apply them and get over to the fun part of things, I want to learn new things, explore the old things and develop lot of interesting things that may or maynot make sense.

Lets start with what happened,

So, I got an idea while working in class, that can we measure the weight or the force applied on the robot using the current change in it? So to execute it, I did run some experiments and shared with the proff. Instead of he being happy for it, he said that is stupid and is waste of time. What virus also did to his students.

See, if I dont dive deep into the robotics, and dont enjoy the process, that would just be utter stupid right?

So this person says, all this is waste of time, and he is already disappointed with me about me wasting my time.

See, last time it was for CVPR paper, definately at his age, saving every minute and hour is important – he can choose what he want to prioritize, and what not, but not for me, if I do that, I will not grow, I will not learn anything.

Due to his this behaviour, the other students in the lab are also sad.

See, the way he says is good, that dont do anything other than focusing on your thesis. Just do that and nothing else. You dont have much time to waste and do other things. That’s true.

But if I don’t do the fun things, like working on neuroscience project, and other testing experiments, working with LLM on robots, then I will be just wasting my time. I would be watching youtube, watching some stupid courses and all. Its better naa to put something good in that time? Instead of watching a netflix series, or a fancy new show, I am just doing practical experiments that would help me to learn.

All things doesnt work in his way, he should understand this.

He just cares about himself, and not about anyone. And that is very bad way of treating the PhD Students. They deserve to be cherished on whatever they do.

What I wanted: So I would share him, he would say yes, that’s a good way of thinking, we can reduce a lot of robotic sensors due to that, Great work, See there are these new conferences coming lets put the paper here and see how further it goes. But you need to put mathematical part in it and analyse how each joint is getting affected by the force applied on each part.

Simple!!! I would be happy, would work on my thesis too, and all,

What happened: “That’s waste of time” Anything that is not related to your thesis, is just waste of time. If you do something related to your course, thats a different thing and would be taken during the class. Not in PhD, Nothing else should be added to your PhD, just do what was decided. Hopping from one to another will give you nothing. Its just a waste of time.

Dude!! Agreed!!! but I can’t magically understand how the robot works in day right? I need to get comfortable with the bots, to enjoy the flow, then will develop something.

So yeah, this is to my Professor!! Hope he never reads this.
